#THE BOMBAY ROYALE MOVIE#
The movie is a tear-jerker, not your average Bollywood pot-boiler, but well worth digging up. The guy's been the gold standard for Indian masculinity ever since. That movie has some of the most beautiful Hindi songs ever and Amitabh hits the screen as a fully finished legend in his first major outing. People remember him for his roles as an "angry young man" in a run of films in the late 70s, but for me his standout performance was one of his first ever roles in a classic film called Anand. Amitabh had it all - looks, presence and he was a very versatile actor. He really did define the era in Bollywood. Shahrukh has a great style (and he's very good at pouting) - but if given a choice it's gotta be the Big B. To the tiger, heart a-flutters, i have to ask you is it amitabh or shahrukh who does it for you? who is the master and why? and what are your favourite performances by your hero of choice? I also highly admire classical north Indian singers like Kaushiki Chakarbarty who take the voice to whole other levels of finesse. As far as singers go Asha Bhonsle definitely has to be mentioned because she is such a defining factor in this style since the 60’s. They have an elegant, classic look with a regal air about them AND are great dancers. My favourite Bollywood beauties would have to be Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. which singers influenced you and which actresses are your style models? It honestly surprised me to learn that there really wasn’t anyone else doing what we were doing.Īnd to the mysterious lady, i’m blushing as i speak to you directly, but you’re such the stunning bombshell, tell me just which of the bollywood starlets do it for you. The old soundtracks, composers and playback singers from those old Bollywood (and Tollywood) films are off the hook – I really just wanted to be able to play saxophone in band like that (okay, and dress up in naval regalia like a coked-out Captain Stubing). By the time I came to putting the band together the musical fusion seemed so, well, obvious. I know the genre could be perceived as left field but I’d been collecting and listening to Bollywood records for years. just how did you conceive of such a unique and indeed captivating sound? i don’t want to state the obvious but your hindi pop, surf rock, disco dancefloor fusion is a little off the turntable.

you’re the creator and musical director of the band.

I’d like to direct my first question to the skipper. since the island of dr electric hit the powder studio turntable, we can’t bring ourselves to sit down and work for want of dancing. So bombay royale, i’m completely like, over the top, aghast to be speaking with you guys.
